Manchester City moved one step nearer to the Premiership as Darren Huckerby's hat-trick gave them a richly deserved victory over Nottingham Forest.

After scoring two well-taken goals just before the interval, Huckerby completed his personal haul with an 84th-minute penalty.

The league leaders dominated from the outset but the all-important first goal failed to come as Shaun Goater spurned two great opportunities.

A City goal, however, appeared inevitable, and Huckerby's 20th of the season arrived on 40 minutes when he volleyed past Darren Ward into the bottom corner.

Goal number 21 followed just five minutes later when Goater played Huckerby in and the 25-year-old drilled home from the left side of the box.

Huckerby completed his hat-trick with six minutes left. Jensen was brought down by Matthieu Louis-Jean and Huckerby sent Ward the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Man City: Nash, Dunne, Howey, Pearce, Jihai, Wright-Phillips, Horlock, Benarbia, Jensen, Goater, Huckerby. Subs: Royce, Wiekens, Mears, Mettomo, Macken.

Nottm Forest: Ward, Louis-Jean, Scimeca, Hjelde, Brennan, Prutton, Gray, Williams, Bopp, Harewood, Reid. Subs: Formann, Jones, Michael Dawson, Westcarr, Cash.

Referee: M Jones (Chester)
