Barnsley extended their unbeaten league run to 12 games with an entertaining draw against high-flying Burnley.

The Tykes took an early lead thanks to Darren Barnard's 20-yard free-kick.

Burnley, however, would not surrender and scored a deserved equaliser eight minutes before the break through Gareth Taylor.

The visitors squandered late chances to snatch the win, but both teams deserved a point.

Barnsley might even feel aggrieved not to have secured victory after having two goals disallowed.

The first came as early as the fourth minute when Mike Sheron headed in from two yards but was ruled offside.

But Barnsley were not to be denied a goal and in the sixth minute they broke the deadlock.

Barnard's 20-yard curler clipped the inside of Marlon Beresford's left-hand post before nestling in the back of the net.

Burnley started to find their feet as the half wore on, and - having wasted several chances - eventually equalised after 37 minutes.

Paul Weller played in Lee Briscoe down the left wing and the full-back's cross was headed home by Taylor.

Barnsley had a goal disallowed in the 51st minute.

Chris Morgan's header was ruled out after the referee decided the defender had climed on an opponent to reach the ball.

Poor finishing

Barnsley again went close just minutes later when Sheron sent a free header wide from eight yards.

The same striker was guilty of squandering a chance when he sent a low effort wide of the target from 18 yards.

Burnley nearly won the game with a late chance - but Briscoe's curling free-kick was well saved by Miller.

While substitute Alan Moore should have done better with a low 15-yard drive which was again blocked by Miller.

Barnsley: Miller, Mulligan, Barker, Morgan, Chettle, Donovan, Lumsdon, Gary Jones, Barnard, Dyer, Sheron. Subs: Marriott, Ward, Neil, Crooks, Bedeau.

Burnley: Beresford, West, Briscoe, Cox, Gnohere, Weller, Ball, Grant, Little, Taylor, Ian Moore. Subs: Armstrong, Cook, Maylett, Blake, Alan Moore.

Referee: R Beeby (Northampton).
