Barnsley moved out of the Division One relegation zone with a comfortable win over fellow strugglers Walsall.

The Tykes cruised to their second win under new boss Steve Parkin thanks to two goals from in-form striker Mike Sheron.

Bruce Dyer and Kevin Donovan completed the rout as Walsall suffered their third successive defeat against a South Yorkshire side.

Walsall did pull one back with the best goal of the game from substitute Zigor Aranalde.

Before Barnsley took the lead, both teams had struck the woodwork in an entertaining opening period.

The Tykes then broke the deadlock on 25 minutes.

Sheron's second

Barnard's quickly taken free-kick rebounded to Sheron, whose 20-yard effort was deflected over Walsall goalkeeper James Walker.

Walsall went close to pulling one back when Frederic Biancalani's 25-yard drive was too hot for Barnsley goalkeeper Kevin Miller to hold, but the home side cleared the danger.

Barnsley then doubled their lead with five minutes of the half remaining, Dyer netting his 10th of the season after Sheron's flick-on.

On the stroke of half-time Dyer again went close, but his volley was well saved by Walker.

Walsall suffered a terrible start to the second half as Barnsley moved further in front on 52 minutes.

Donovan picked up a blocked Sheron shot to slide the ball home into the far corner.

Walsall were given a glimmer of hope midway through the second half.

Aranalde, who had been on the field for just four minutes, fired a fierce 25-yard volley into the roof of the net.

But Barnsley extinguished Walsall's hopes when Sheron scored his second of the game.

Dyer's deflected shot was sent across the face of goal to leave Sheron with an easy finish.
