Grimsby 1-1 Wolves

E-mail your reaction to Football Talk

Wolves blew their chance to top the Division One table as they were held to a draw by lowly Grimsby.

Phil Jevons gave the hosts a surprise early lead in the second minute with a spectacular overhead kick.

A throw-in from Danny Butterfield found Jevons who, from just inside the area, sent his effort in at the far post.

But just five minutes later, Wolves were level.

Under pressure, Grimsby's Paul Groves misdirected a header from Alex Rae's cross into his own net.

Wolves were not the only side to be disappointed to miss out on three points on Friday night.

Grimsby boss Lennie Lawrence said "Wolves were not at their best because of us and we could have won that."

Offside blow

Wolves were left aggrieved at the end when Shaun Newton netted from close range in the final minutes.

But his wild celebrations were cut short as a linesman flagged for an offside against substitute Cedric Roussel.

There were few chances otherwise, although the Mariners almost took the lead in the 53rd minute.

Jeffrey met a Meno Willems cross at the near post and his flick was just inches wide.

Wolves had only their second shot on target in the 73rd minute, Rae turning and firing first time straight at Coyne.

Then Groves almost made it an own goal double when he sliced Newton's cross, but Coyne made a smart save.

Grimsby: Coyne, Butterfield, Gallimore, Broomes, Groves, Pouton, Coldicott, Willems, Jeffrey, Jevons, Boulding. Subs: Burnett, Neilson, Croudson, Raven, Christopher Thompson.

Wolverhampton: Oakes, Muscat, Naylor, Butler, Lescott, Newton, Rae, Cameron, Proudlock, Sturridge, Kennedy. Subs: Robinson, Roussel, Pollet, Camara, Murray.

Referee: K Hill (Royston)
