Sheffield United have won a third successive home match in the league, courtesy of Michael Tonge's first half goal against Crewe.

The Blades went into the game missing several first-choice strikers through injury.

But their rhythm was not disrupted by the absentees and the hosts dominated the first half with Paul Peschisolido to the fore.

The Canadian had a shot blocked by the impressive David Walton before playing a telling role in the goal.

He laid the ball off for Tonge to drive inside Clayton Ince's near post.

Adrian Littlejohn and Paul Devlin wasted good chances to extend the lead.

But Kenny Lunt was proving to be a thorn in United's side with impressive through balls to Rob Hulse and Dean Ashton as the visitors grew in stature.

The second half started with Crewe on the attack and Walton headed over when he should have scored from a corner.

Ashton should have also found the back of the net when put through by Hulse, but he shot over from just 12 yards.

Efe Sodje then headed wide from a Lunt free-kick as United held on for a deserved victory.
