Brighton 2-1 Coventry

An own goal from Richard Keogh and a strike from Romain Vincelot secure a much-needed win for Brighton over Coventry.

An own goal from Richard Keogh and a header from Romain Vincelot secured a much-needed win for Brighton over Coventry.

The Seagulls took the lead when the ball went in off Keogh after Joe Murphy had done well to save from Craig Mackail-Smith.

The visitors hit back moments later through Gary Gardner, who headed home on his debut.

Vincelot then secured the victory with a stunning header.

After a blistering start to the season the hosts had won just one of their last 11 league matches before this game, while Coventry had won just twice so far.

The home side were ahead with seven minutes on the clock, a succession of errors leading to the opening goal.

Sammy Clingan's poor pass to Keogh allowed Mackail-Smith to nip in and race through on goal. His initial shot was parried clear by Murphy but the ball hit Keogh and ended up in the back of the empty net.

The visitors were level two minutes later when Gardner, who only signed on loan from Aston Villa on Thursday, powered in a header at the back post to restore parity.

Gus Poyet was then forced into an early change when Marcos Painter was forced off through injury but it was his replacement Vincelot who went on to secure the victory.

The Frenchman was left unmarked in the area and he was on hand to head home a free-kick and score his first goal since signing from Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:

"There were a few nerves that you could feel in the stands and it was difficult for the fans to keep hold of their nerves.

"When you're in the situation that we were a few weeks ago, it's all about winning games.

"The equaliser didn't change the way we wanted to play and we got the winner with one of the best headers this year by far, which is good because we don't score too many of them."
