Gillingham 1-2 Coventry
Coventry continued their revival under caretaker manager Roland Nilsson but were made to work hard by Gillingham at Priestfield.

First-half goals by Jairo Martinez and Youssef Chippo put the visitors in charge.

But the Sky Blues had to play the final half-hour with 10 men after Youssef Safri was sent off for two bookable offences.

Coventry had the best of the early play with Laurent Delorge and Lee Carsley going close.

And when Delorge failed to control the ball in the 14th minute, Martinez pounced to whip a low shot past Gills keeper Vince Bartram.

Gillingham's best spell came when Iffy Onuora headed against the crossbar from Ty Gooden's cross.

Goalmouth scramble

Marcus Browning was then denied by Andy Goram, making his debut, who pulled off a point-blank save.

But moments before the break, Chippo increased Coventry's lead with his first goal for 18 months, sliding home after a goalmouth scramble.

The visitors lost Nilsson and skipper Gary Breen to injury and then saw a third defender Muhamed Konjic go off with an arm problem.

When Safri received his second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Gills substitute David Perpetuini, the home side sensed their chance to get back into the game.

Sub Paul Shaw duly clawed a goal back - but only in stoppage time - and Coventry's ten men held on for victory.

Gillingham: Bartram, Nosworthy, Ashby, Hope, Edge, Hessenthaler, Smith, Browning, Gooden, King, Onuora. Subs: Butters, Ipoua, Shaw, Saunders, Perpetuini.

Coventry: Goram, Nilsson, Shaw, Konjic, Breen, Edworthy, Safri, Carsley, Chippo, Delorge, Martinez. Subs: Quinn, Hedman, O'Neill, Williams, McSheffrey.

Referee: E Wolstenholme (Blackburn)
