Cardiff 3-1 Bristol City

Cardiff 3-1 Bristol City

Cardiff City are setting the early Championship pace as three first-half goals beat Bristol City.

Captain Mark Hudson headed Craig Conway's cross past Robins keeper David James before visiting striker Brett Pitman's shot hit the Cardiff bar.

Conway doubled Cardiff's lead when he cracked Joe Mason's cute pass into the corner from outside the box.

Rob Earnshaw tapped in a third, after Don Cowie's shot was parried by James, before Nicky Maynard's consolation.

But Cardiff, unchanged from their opening day win at West Ham, comfortably held on to secure back-to-back wins at the start of the season for the first time in nine years.

Winning start delights Mackay

And Malky Mackay celebrated a notable Severnside derby victory in his first home game as Bluebirds boss to send the Welsh side top of the early season table.

However, the visitors will be worried by their form as Bristol have conceded six goals in two games - this demolition added to their 3-0 home defeat by Ipswich last week - and are bottom of the table.

Hudson gave the Robins an early warning of what was to come as the unmarked centre-back guided a simple downward header home from six yards after Conway's left-wing centre.

Kenny Miller, Earnshaw and Anthony Gerrard all went close before Conway followed up his assist with a goal of his own as he stroked a lovely 20-yard effort across James and into the bottom corner.

But Keith Millen's men threw away a great opportunity to drag themselves back into the game when Pitman somehow fired hit shot against the crossbar from close range when faced with an open goal.

And Bristol were made to pay when home debutant Earnshaw was presented with an easy tap-in for Cardiff's third after James saved Cowie's effort.

It was the Wales striker's first goal in his second spell at his boyhood club - and first Cardiff strike for seven years.

The second-half was a relative stroll for Cardiff but Maynard did pull a goal back for the demoralised visitors inside the final 10 minutes with a well-taken finish from the right side of the penalty area.
