Bolton 3-0 West Brom (agg: 5-2)

West Brom were left ruing their first-leg generosity as Bolton scored three unanswered goals to reach the First Division play-off final.

With the scores level after Wanderers' revival in their previous encounter, Gudni Bergsson gave the Trotters the perfect start with a goal after just 10 minutes.

Ricardo Gardner doubled the advantage when he lashed home a low drive 18 minutes into the second half before Michael Ricketts polished things off in stoppage time.

It was a thoroughly professional performance from the boys, we are delighted to get a result that, for once this season, we possibly didn't deserve

Such a comprehensive defeat was harsh on West Brom, who dominated possession for long periods.

But the real damage was done in the first leg at the Hawthorns, when the Midlands outfit let their two-goal advantage slip.

This time round Gary Megson's side also had their share of the action, but were unable to provide the necessary cutting edge in front of goal.

West Brom had more of the play in the first half but Jason Roberts, with 17 goals to his name this season, put their best effort into the side netting.

Despite their early pressure, it was Sam Allardyce's men who broke the deadlock when Bergsson stole in unmarked to steer home a Simon Charlton free-kick.

It was the Bolton skipper's 10th goal of the season and his second in the play-off semi-finals.

Despite trailing, West Brom looked the better side and the Bolton goal came under continued pressure.

The game opened up and could have gone either way after a flurry of chances at either end until Bolton's Gardner scored the decisive goal.

The Jamaican ran onto a fine through ball from Anthony Barness to drill home a fine left-foot drive 28 minutes from time.

Ricketts sealed Bolton's place at the play-off final in Cardiff, rounding Russell Hoult near the end.
