Nielsen makes Taylor's Vicarage Road send-off a happy one
Allan Nielsen, Graham Taylor's most expensive signing at 2.3m, spared the former England manager's blushes at his Vicarage Road farewell.

The Danish international popped up in the last minute to head an equaliser but the point salvaged is not enough to keep Watford's play-off hopes alive.

Gifton Noel-Williams missed two good chances in the first half when set up by the busy Tommy Smith.

Watford's defence, whose frailties have been their undoing this season, allowed Paul Rideout to head just wide and the busy Seyni N'Diaye to test keeper Alex Chamberlain with a couple of shots.

In the last minute of the first half Smith set up Paul Robinson for a good chance but he was frustrated by Tranmere keeper Joe Murphy.

Smith went just wide and leading scorer Tommy Mooney, who had been presented with the player of the season award before kick-off, nodded off target as Watford stepped up the pressure after the break.

But after 59 minutes Alan Morgan broke down the right.

Watford skipper Robert Page robbed him with a sliding tackle but knocked the ball into the centre.

Neil Cox slid to the ground and N'Diaye scored unchallenged.

It looked as if Taylor's final Vicarage Road game in charge would end on a losing note until Nielsen intervened with a last minute header.
