Blackburn 2-0 Huddersfield

Promotion-chasing Blackburn secured a vital win over struggling Huddersfield despite an anxious performance at Ewood Park.

Gary Flitcroft put them ahead after half-an-hour and their task was made considerably easier when Huddersfield keeper Nico Vaesen was sent-off early in the second-half.

But a combination of nerves and the resolute Huddersfield defence, marshalled excellently by Chris Lucketti, prevented Blackburn getting a second goal.

Matt Jansen eventually scored for the home side in the 89th minute with an impudent strike that put the game beyond doubt.

Blackburn had been edgy for much of the first-half.

For the first 25 minutes Huddersfield, with Dutch midfielder Dean Gorre particularly prominent, more than held their own.

Flitcroft opener

There were very few chances for either side, but David Dunn should have put Blackburn in the lead after 20 minutes.

The young midfielder, who has been in fantastic form this season, collected a knock-on from the edge of the area by Marcus Bent.

Dunn bemused Adi Moses with a twisting and turning run, eventually putting the Huddersfield defender on his backside, but screwed his shot disappointingly wide of the post when clean through.

But after half-an-hour Gary Flitcroft did find the net for Blackburn.

Bent again headed on from the edge of the area, and Flitcroft got in front of Huddersfield's two central defenders inside the area before sliding to send the ball through Vaesen's legs.

Blackburn started the second-half strongly and their dominance was enhanced when Vaesen was sent-off after 50 minutes.

Jansen's late strike

Henning Berg played a superb long ball over the back of Huddersfield's defence and Jansen collected 20 yards out.

Vaesen sensed the danger and came racing off his line, but blocked Jansen's shot with his arms when clearly outside of his area.

The referee had little option but to show the Belgian keeper a red card.

The visitors took off Ben Thornley and brought on substitute keeper Martyn Margetson but could not stop Blackburn bossing the game.

Nevertheless, the Terriers held firm and were unlucky not to equalise when Chris Armstrong chested the ball inside the area and unleashed a powerful volley that struck the inside of the far post before rebounding to safety.

Jansen disappointingly missed when clean through late on, but made amends by curling the ball past Margetson to score his 21st goal of the season in the 89th minute.
