Rounds up the action at Craven Cottage

Fulham 0-1 Birmingham
Martin Grainger
Martin Grainger scored a superb goal for City
A free-kick two minutes into the second half by Martin Grainger proved decisive as Birmingham City beat Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The runaway First Division leaders were halted in their tracks by Trevor Francis' side, who have done their own promotion hopes no harm with this result.

Fulham created enough chances to win the game, but could not overcome the handicap of losing Louis Saha, Louis Boa Morte and Barry Hayles in attack.

Midweek signing Peter Moller led the attack, partnered by Andrejs Stolcers but they never had the sharpness of the missing trio.

Piece of skill

The breakthrough came for Birmingham instead, after Kit Symons was adjudged to have fouled Dele Adebola on the edge of the goal area.

Grainger stepped up to produce a piece of skill that has become synonymous with Jean Tigana's side this season, when he curled the free-kick into the net.

Karlheinz Riedle came on for his first appearance of the season after 55 minutes, but his efforts were not enough.

Once the Blues had gone in front they made sure they had 11 players behind the ball and goalkeeper Ian Bennett was not troubled too much.

The Cottagers best effort came from Bjarne Goldbaek who had a free-kick in an identical position to Grainger, but his effort struck the underside of the bar.

Fulham: Taylor, Finnan, Brevett, Melville, Symons, Clark, Goldbaek, Davis, Fernandes, Moller, Stolcers. Subs: Hahnemann, Trollope, Riedle, Neilson, Lewis.

Birmingham: Bennett, Gill, Eaden, Grainger, Sonner, O'Connor, Purse, Michael Johnson, Lazaridis, Adebola, Horsfield. Subs: Poole, Burrows, Hughes, Andrew Johnson, Ndlovu.

Referee: S Mathieson (Stockport)
