Fulham 3-1 Portsmouth
Louis Saha
Louis Saha set up Fulham's opening goal
Two goals from Barry Hayles and another from Lee Clark gave Fulham a deserved victory over nine-man Portsmouth.

The visitors had Linvoy Primus and Ceri Hughes sent off in the second half for two bookable offences and neither could complain.

Hayles opened with the scoring in the 10th minute when Louis Saha cleverly flicked the ball to him and he drove it past goalkeeper Russell Hoult from close range.

Steve Claridge equalised two minutes before the interval when he drove home a cross from Hughes from even closer range.

Hayles' second goal came in the 68th minute with another positive finish when put clear by Luis Boa Morte.

Clark, who minutes earlier had had two good efforts saved by Hoult, made it third time lucky when he threaded his way through the area and drove the ball home from 15 yards.

Red cards

The game will be as much remembered for the two sending offs.

Referee Keith Hill had let a number of Pompey challenges go by before booking Primus in the 13th minute and Hughes in the 23rd.

Primus could have no argument after bringing down Saha in the 51st minute and Hughes, who had received a final warning minutes earlier, was sent off for another foul in the 65th minute.

Despite being outnumbered Portsmouth provided spirited opposition and still made a game of it, but it was when they were down to nine that they finally cracked.

Fulham probably should have won by more but Hoult made some good saves and some of the home side's marksmanship was not quite at its best.
