Portsmouth 2-2 Blackburn
Steve Claridge
Claridge: Seven games without defeat
Blackburn's run of six victories in succession came to a thundering halt in a rain swept clash at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth appeared to be cruising towards three points until Rovers substitute Matt Jansen headed the ball home eight minutes from time to rescue a draw.

Portsmouth contributed fully to an exciting match of many chances and earned a point to take Steve Claridge's unbeaten run to seven matches since he took command.

Blackburn had the better of the first half and Mark Hughes almost scored in the 13th minute with a fierce volley which was pushed onto the bar by goalkeeper Russell Hoult.

But Portsmouth went ahead in the 43rd minute when Claridge created a gap for Nigel Quashie to blast a superb left-foot shot from 25 yards just inside the post.

Celebrations

But home celebrations were cut short within a minute when Hughes was brought down on the edge of the area at the other end.

Stig Bjornebye stepped up to bend a cunning left-foot free-kick just under the bar beyond goalkeeper Hoult.

Hoult made outstanding saves in the second half from John Curtis and Garry Flitcroft.

But it was Pompey who went ahead again in the 62nd minute with Claridge once more involved with a pass which put Thomas Thogersen away. He squared for Michael Panopoulos to score with a low left-foot shot.

Blackburn manager Graeme Souness immediately sent on Jansen and Rovers remained a threat on a slippery surface.

But they did not draw level again until the 82nd minute when David Dunn took a corner on the right and Jansen rose to head in from 10 yards.

Portsmouth had Ceri Hughes and Shaun Derry booked for fouls, a fate which also befell Blackburn's Dunn.
