New Pickering Town player-manager Pete Vasey says he is delighted to have taken charge at Mill Lane.

The 28-year-old centre-back was appointed in May after previous manager Mitch Cook left for Bridlington Town.

The former York City reserve and youth team coach told BBC Radio York: "It's a really well run club and I'm really delighted to be part of it.

"I will be signing as a player, but I'll only be involved if we're scraping the barrel."

The first job for Vasey, who still coaches at the York College Football Academy, is to bring in players for the new season.

He added: "Most of my time at the moment is spent on the phone, either ringing players or organising the pre-season programme.

"It's a part-time job, but at the minute it's full-time. I was expecting that when I took over so it's no great shock to the system.

"I'm just happy to be involved and speaking to players about football."

Pickering finished last season in seventh place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and Vasey hopes this year they can do better.

"The board are looking to get promotion. They've not stated they're expecting me to do it in my first year, they've not given me a target, but it is something they're looking forward to in the future," he said.

"I'm an ambitious person myself and I would expect to work for somebody who is equally as ambitious."
