Former York City community development officer Peter Vasey has been named as the new manager of Pickering Town.

He takes over at the Northern Counties East League club from Mitch Cook who has joined Bridlington Town.

Pickering chairman Keith Usher told BBC Radio York: "He's new to management but we felt he offered us what we were looking for.

"There was quite a bit of interest and we interviewed and made a decision that Peter was the man for us."

Usher added: "We were looking for good coaching, good contacts and to develop the community side of the football club with the junior section and the community itself.

It will be very nice if we can improve on last season when we finished 7th with Mitch

"It's very important for us to continue with this and to link up with the juniors. It's actually called Pickering Town Community Football club and we want to continue with that link."

Vasey, 28, currently coaches at the York College Football Academy and he is assistant manager of the North Riding County FA under-17's and 18's. He is also a former York City trainee and he went on to play for Pickering Town in 2004.

Usher said they are now hoping to match or better last season's league position.

"It will be very nice if we can improve on last season when we finished seventh with Mitch. If everything went well we could be higher up and even at the top."
