Rod Stringer quits as Braintree Town manager

Braintree Town

Rod Stringer has resigned as Braintree Town manager just weeks after winning the Blue Square Bet South title.

"We couldn't meet an agreement, the club is very cautious of where they're going to go," Stringer told BBC Essex.

Chairman Lee Harding added: "Despite discussing options we couldn't reach an agreement, so Rod chose to stand down on that basis."

Assistant manager Keith Rowland and general manager Bobby Ritchie have also left Cressing Road.

Stringer took charge of Braintree in May 2010 after leaving Aveley, and enjoyed instant success winning the Blue Square Bet South title by seven points.

The promotion to the top flight of non-league football is the highest level Braintree have reached in their 113-year history.

Harding insists the board were willing to double the club's budget for their debut season in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

But Stringer says talks fell down because he was not guaranteed a reliable car for travelling to rivals' grounds.

"You have to get around to watch these games, they wanted to offer me a car that was not going to do that," he explained.

"I need a reliable car, I don't need something that's going to have 150,000 miles on the clock.

"As far as I'm concerned that's all it was at the death, we had agreed on the rest of the terms.

"When it came back that the car couldn't be done, they wanted me to take it out on personal terms and an allowance, I couldn't do that without a contract."

Harding added: "We talked through the resources that were available, we're not looking to compete with the full-time Luton's and Grimsby Town's. We want to remain debt free.

"Over the past year Rod has juggled his private business commitments with his football superbly well.

"What we said to Rod, as we will say to the new manager, is this is what we can afford to spend, as to how you do it is a blank sheet of paper."
