Darrell Clarke confident of 'cup' spirit at Salisbury

Salisbury boss Darrell Clarke hopes his players draw from the experience of two cup runs this season as they prepare for the Southern Premier play-offs.

Salisbury reached the last eight in this season's FA Trophy and the final qualifying round of the FA Cup.

And, ahead of Thursday's semi-final against Cambridge City, Clarke admits: "We can learn from them.

"If it's the Salisbury I know that turn up I'm very confident. It's a four-team cup really," Clarke told BBC Wiltshire.

After being demoted from the Blue Square Premier in the summer, many tipped Salisbury to win automatic promotion. But they have had to settle for third place.

"My target was to try and get promotion," said Clarke, appointed as player-manager in August.

"We're still on target. For whatever reason the last seven or eight weeks we haven't met the standards.

"But it's a case of putting the last couple of months behind us. We go into the play-offs with a great chance."

Cambridge finished fourth, only behind on goal difference, and beat the Whites at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium in March.

"Cambridge have had a great season," said Clarke. "They took four points off us.

"It's not going to be easy but we'll have our Ray Mac faithful right behind us and it's up to the boys to show me what they're capable of."
