Weymouth chairman George Rolls resigns from the club

Weymouth chairman George Rolls has resigned from the club following the fans general meeting on Thursday.

The meeting was held at the Bob Lucas Stadium after Weymouth's 2-1 defeat by Didcot, to let fans decide whether Rolls should stay at the club.

The ex-Cambridge United chairman took over at Weymouth in November 2009, and rescued the club from administration.

Rolls had previously stated he would walk away from the club if he did not get the fans' backing.

Weymouth associate director William Ronald has also resigned from the club and it is yet to be confirmed who will replace the pair.

Rolls announced in February that he would hold a meeting after the Didcot fixture because he was unhappy at "a small minority that are intent on causing trouble and negativity for the club".

Rolls' time with the Terras has not been without controversy.

He has said he put around £200,000 into the club to keep it afloat when he joined 16 months ago. But debts continued to grow and in March 2010 the club entered into a company voluntary agreement (CVA) with creditors. The Terras were penalised 10 points to leave them at the bottom of the Zamaretto Premier Division.

In addition, Rolls sacked then manager Ian Hutchinson in January last year even though he had guided the club to their best results for a year.

The chairman then reappointed Hutchinson just three months later before sacking him again, shortly after saying he intended to extend his contract at the club beyond 2012.
