Southport 4-0 York City

Blue Square Bet Premier

Shaun Whalley scored twice on his return to the club as Southport thrashed 10-man York City.

York were put on the back foot from the third minute when David McGurk was sent off for bringing down Whalley and Chris Lever converted the resulting penalty.

Whalley then shot home to open his account a minute later before Kevin Lee headed in to make it 3-0 at half-time.

And Whalley netted his second after the break when he pounced on York keeper Michael Ingham's parry to slot home.

Southport midfielder Liam Blakeman praised Whalley's impact for Liam Watson's men as he began his second spell at the club, having first joined the Sandgrounders on loan from Wrexham in 2009.

"We all know what Shaun's about," Blakeman told BBC Radio Merseyside. "If you get the ball in behind the defenders he's a nightmare for them.

"After a minute he showed why Liam Watson brought him back. He was brilliant against York."
