Chelmsford City through to FA Cup first round

Chelmsford City

Chelmsford reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for only the second time in 11 years after beating Carshalton on Monday night.

The Clarets secured a 3-2 home win in their fourth qualifying round replay.

Goals from Anthony Cook and Sam Higgins put the Clarets in front before Justyn Roberts and Joel Ledgister put the visitors back on level terms.

Higgins' second goal secured the win 10 minutes from time as Carshalton had Mbive Lokando and David Obaze sent off.

Chelmsford manager Glenn Pennyfather told BBC Essex: "I thought we started the game extremely well, we had a good tempo.

"They scored a fantastic goal out of the blue and suddenly it gave them an incentive and lifted them a little bit.

"I was pleased with the way we came about our work in the second half, up against some pretty strong-arm tactics."

The Clarets will now play either Hendon or Metropolitan Police in the first round next month.

Chelmsford last reached the first round in 2006, when they lost to Aldershot, who played in the Football Conference at the time.

The last time they faced Football League opposition in the competition was a 4-0 First Round defeat by Oldham Athletic in the 1999/2000 season.
