Croydon Athletic call off three matches

Non-league football

Croydon Athletic have postponed their next two league fixtures and withdrawn from the FA Cup following the exit of their club's management team.

Manager Tim O'Shea and assistant Neil Smith left the club after the arrest and bail of team owner Mazhar Majeed.

Majeed was arrested in connection with spot-fixing claims regarding the recent cricket Test match between Pakistan and England at Lord's.

O'Shea said: "Everything that has gone on has affected everyone."

The club have also been unable to pay the players' wages in August.

The league has agreed to postpone the club's next two fixtures - away at Tooting & Mitcham on 7 September and the home tie against Sutton United on 18 September.

Ryman League chairman Alan Turvey said: "We are concerned to act in the best interests of all parties in this matter and to make sure that every avenue is explored to see if the club can continue.

"We do not want players to play in matches which may not count nor do we want spectators to pay to see matches whose results are then erased from the records."

Athletic's withdrawal from the FA Cup means that Kingstonian receive a bye to the next round.
