Lee Peacock was the hero as Grimsby began life as a non-league side with a hard-fought win over 10-man Crawley.
The hosts began well and new signing Matt Tubbs squandered two excellent early openings.
A Steven Watt header was the closest the Mariners came to scoring until Crawley had keeper Michel Kuipers sent off for handling outside his area.
Grimsby took advantage immediately as Peacock side-footed in the winner from the resultant free-kick on 39 minutes.
