New Lewes owners pledge democracy

Lewes

One of the six executives now running Blue Square Bet South side Lewes says the club will be run as a democracy.

The "Rooks 125" fans' consortium took over last week, with former managing director Martin Elliott and his board stepping aside.

Charlie Dowbray told BBC Sussex: "What we're talking about here is a Wimbledon or a Barcelona.

"It's one member, one share, one vote. We feel that's the best way to have ownership of the club."

He added: "Fan ownership can conjure up images of well-intentioned amateurs but nothing can be further from the truth.

"This will be an extremely professionally run football club but one that is run for the benefits of its community."

Dowbray confirmed that manager Steve Ibbitson will remain as Rooks manager after saving the club from relegation last year.

"Ibbo is a legend and has been absolutely amazing," he said.

"He was very, very keen to stay in charge and we're very keen to have him so that was an easy one."
