A late goal from Mike Braithwaite gave Tadcaster Albion a 2-1 home win over Hemsworth to earn promotion - along with the NCEL Division One title.

Hemsworth took an early lead but long-serving Danny Pitts equalised on 65 minutes to set up the late drama.

A big crowd, by Albion standards, of 452 witnessed the win-or-bust match.

"For a club like Tadcaster, after all the trials and tribulations they've gone through it's immense," Albion boss Paul Marshall told BBC Radio York.

"The crowds have just built and built over the last few games, everybody's loving it coming down to Albion.

Tonight, after all the hard work and the graft, it's unbelievable

"Long may it continue into next season. Let's hope they all come back."

Visiting keeper Dale Walstow's surprise fumble left Braithwaite with the 85th minute tap-in that clinched the title. And Marshall admitted: "Someone was looking down on me again.

"When they score after 90 seconds, all your pre-planning goes out of the window. And their keeper has been outstanding.

"Then he decides to drop one and we get a nice little rebound."

Tadcaster president Kevin Derry said he had not seen such scenes at Ings Lane in his 38 years at the club.

"We've had some rough times in the past three or four years, with arson attacks and other things," he said. "And this is just reward for a lot of people.

"I am so pleased for Danny Pitts and Paul James in particular.

"Those lads have stuck with us through thick and a lot of thin.

"Tonight, after all the hard work and the graft, it's unbelievable."

Veteran fan Ray Strothard, 78, has been following Albion for 65 years as "player, spectator and referee-baiter".

"In all the time I've been with the Albion I'm pretty certain we've never been top of the league," he said. "We've never achieved this.

"There haven't been many occasions this season when we've gone home and kicked the cat out of the door!"
