Telford enthusiasm had disappeared - Carter

AFC Telford United have sacked manager Rob Smith after four years, BBC Radio Shropshire reports.

The news comes after Telford failed to reach the Blue Square North play-offs.

Smith and assistant Larry Chambers joined Telford in February 2006, helping them avoid relegation from the Unibond Premier in their first season.

They went up the following year after a 3-1 win play-off win at Witton and then twice went close to gaining promotion into the Blue Square Premier.

The Bucks lost 4-0 on aggregate against Barrow in the play-off semi-final in 2008, then last year they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Gateshead in the final.

Smith had said he felt he was the right man to put things right and had hoped the board of directors would renew his contract.

Captain Stuart Whitehead will take charge of the Bucks against Vauxhall Motors on the final day.
