Altrincham 0-1 Stevenage

Charlie Griffin
Griffin provided much-needed impetus to the Boro attack

Charlie Griffin's 83rd-minute winner lifted Stevenage to within three points of promotion to the Football League as they edged past resolute Altrincham.

The home side enjoyed the best chances before the break as Chris Senior sent his free header crashing onto the bar.

Altrincham keeper Russell Saunders produced a solid performance but his solitary mistake lead to the goal.

Scott Laird set up Tim Sills to shoot, and when Saunders spilled the ball it fell to substitute Griffin to tap in.

Boro found it hard to create clear chances before the break and were matched by Saunders each time they were on target.

The champions-elect pressed in the second half but Altrincham manager Graham Heathcote set his side up defensively and they successfully stifled the visitors.

Nicky Clee saw his deflected shot from 30 yards rebound off the post for an Altrincham corner on 65 minutes.

The game turned 12 minutes later with the introduction of Griffin in place of Yemi Odubade.

He took just five minutes to find the net when he was on the end of Saunders's error to fire in from six yards with his left foot.

Stevenage can now wrap up promotion by winning at Kidderminster on Saturday, while they will also clinch the title if Luton lose to Altrincham.

Stevenage manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio: "If you look at their record they haven't conceded a lot of goals, and it's difficult to break them down.

"We expected a tough ride, but in the end we did the important thing which is to put the ball in the back of the net. Do that and keep a clean sheet, and you win football matches. It was another team performance, because every player contributed."
