Oxford United 1-0 Rushden

Adam Chapman's late penalty secured a vital victory for Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United against promotion rivals Rushden & Diamonds.

The substitute's 86th-minute winner came after substitute Matthew Green was fouled by Jamie Stuart in the area.

Captain James Constable had missed a penalty just before the break, firing his attempt over Dale Roberts' crossbar after a foul by Jefferson Louis.

The U's are now three points clear of Stevenage with a game in hand.

Oxford's closest promotion rivals suffered a 1-0 defeat in their last league game, at the hands of Rushden.

Diamonds had been unbeaten in seven league games, having won six and drawn one.

Rushden & Diamonds manager Justin Edinburgh told BBC Radio Northampton:

"I can accept defeat. But I don't think we deserved it and unfortunately we had an inadequate referee who gave a penalty.

"He made a mistake and I think it proved it in the end because the next five free-kicks went to us.

"You can't make those decisions. He's too far away, the linesman didn't give it but he has. And we had two players booked off the back of it."
