Clive Walker is 'not surprised' at Woking's demise

Ex-Woking winger Walker felt the club lacked the desire to fulfil their ambition

Former Woking player Clive Walker says the club's fall from major Football League promotion contenders to the Blue Square South has come as no surprise.

The 53-year-old helped to lift the FA Trophy three times in four seasons with the Cards during the club's 'glory years' in the mid-1990s.

But the former winger, who left for Cheltenham in 1997, told BBC Surrey: "In many ways I'm really not surprised.

"When I did leave, I felt the club didn't really want promotion."

Instead, Woking ended up going the other way, finally losing their place in the top flight of non-league football after 17 years' tenure in April.

Walker added: "When you don't want promotion, the players get used to it, and they end up leaving.

"The players all changed and things didn't change in the boardroom and that's disappointing, to be truthful, because I firmly believe the club should be in the Football League.

"We had a distinct feeling at a certain stage when I was there that Woking didn't want promotion. That's when it creeps through the players.

"They felt 'what's the point of being here?' That was the disappointment for me."
