Scarborough agree to return home

Scarborough Athletic

Scarborough Athletic have agreed in principle to return to the town.

The club have played in Bridlington since forming in 2007 but could now make their home in a new development based round a local community college.

Chairman Simon Cope told BBC Radio York: "We've been meeting with the George Pindar Community Sports College headmaster for some time.

"It should meet all our requirements in the short to medium term so we're happy to go along with that."

The development plans include a stadium to conform to a minimum grade D level, which would allow Athletic to play in the Unibond League One North, in step four of the non-league pyramid.

The plans include a 1,500 minimum capacity, floodlights, turnstiles, perimeter fencing and provision for catering.

Scarborough Athletic formed after former Football League club Scarborough FC went bust.

Cope said: "They're going to make use of the existing facilities in the leisure centre there. They can be used for hospitality and changing rooms for the players, and then it's a case of building a pitch surround and stands to meet the requirements of the Football Association's grade D.

"We said right from the very start that we needed to get back to Scarborough as quickly as possible in order to maintain that identity as a Scarborough team.

"We've enjoyed our time at Bridlington and we've seen some fantastic crowds out there for the level we're at. But you'll always get pointed at and [people will] say 'well you're not really a Scarborough team because you're playing 20 miles away', so I think this move back is vital for us.

"We recognise that, longer term, we have aims of Conference standard, which this ground obviously doesn't provide - so on the one hand we are working with the college on this proposal and we're still working with the council to try to find a longer-term solution."
