Scarborough clinch NCEL One title

Scarborough Athletic have clinched the NCEL Division One championship in only their second season since formation.

The club followed up their promotion to the Premier Division on Saturday with Tuesday's 3-0 win over Brighouse Town at their temporary Bridlington home.

Director James Hunter told BBC Radio York: "When we first started only 19 months ago we didn't even have so much as a match ball for our first friendly.

"To come from that to have a squad of 20, it's a fantastic feeling."

A crowd of 533, which is a typical Athletic attendance this season, saw the title-clinching game at Queensgate.

Rob Ellis put the Seadogs ahead in the first minute against Brighouse, before further goals from Danny Gray and Dave Hartas sealed the after-match celebrations.

"The fans flooded on to the pitch with the players," said Hunter. "Brilliant to watch, and I've got some fantastic pictures of our chairman Simon Cope being airlifted by all the fans and the players."

The original Scarborough FC folded in 2007, eight years after their ends of their 12-season stay in the Football League. And Hunter is boosted by the success of other reformed clubs.

Aldershot have won their place back in the league, while AFC Telford United are knocking on the door of the Conference top flight again.

"It's an inspiration to us all to see those sorts of teams come from the ashes," said Hunter.

"We have a board of directors of 12 people who all muck in and we have about 50 people who help behind the scenes.

"It's great to see that camaraderie and those people come together under the banner of the football club."

Hunter had nothing but praise for manager Brian France for leading the club to the title with four games to spare.

"Brian has been an inspiration to us all," said Hunter. "He's got the players he wants together now and we can push on for next season."
