Defender Curtis joins Worcester

Former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers defender John Curtis has joined Blue Square South side Worcester City.

The 30-year-old, who made four league starts for United before joining Blackburn for 1.5 million, will play for free as he gets himself match fit.

City manager Richard Dryden told BBC Hereford & Worcester it is a good deal for both parties.

"He puts himself in the shop window to try to get back in the league and helps us out with another body," said Dryden.

The former England 'B' international left Blackburn in 2003 and went on to play for Leicester, Portsmouth, Preston, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers.

Dryden says he is looking forward to having him in the side:

"He wants to play just get himself fit, and he can play anywhere in the middle of the park, and he's a good asset."

"We have got a lot of games, so we have to be lucky with injuries and suspensions, so we are going to lose two or three players.

"I may have to move people out to get new players in."

Dryden is set to name Curtis in Saturday's squad
Curtis is likely to feature for Worcester against Havant and Waterlooville at St George's Lane on Saturday and Dryden feels the visitors should be higher in the Blue Square South table.

"They are one of the big fishes in the league, they are a big, strong, physical side, and they should be further up the league.

"We won 2-0 down there and it was one of our better performances, and we could have won by more.

"We have to stand up and be counted on the physical side again, and we hope out pace up front will see us through."

There will be coverage of Worcester City v Havant and Waterlooville on BBC Hereford & Worcester in Sport on Saturday with Trevor Owens.
