Whild unsure over merger rumour

Gary Whild
Whild says playing in front of such small crowds is not economically viable

Redditch United manager Gary Whild is unsure over rumours of a possible merger with Bromsgrove Rovers.

Whild told BBC Hereford & Worcester that any such move could prove something of a double-edged sword, as it would not be popular with fans.

"If you're talking from a purely football point of view, that possibility would make a strong club.

"Socially, I am not aware if Bromsgrove and Redditch people mix - it's not for me to comment on that."

Whild, who is also a director of the Blue Square North club, did not dismiss the idea.

He pointed out that the current economic climate means running a non-league football club is more difficult than ever and feels every avenue should be explored.

From a football point of view there are positives and negatives, but whether it would work I can't give you the answer to that

"You've always got to look at your options in life and in football, and that is a possible option," he said.

"One thing that is certainly not an option at the moment is for Redditch United to turn up and play the football we are playing and get 150-200 people to home games.

"That is a fact, it is not rocket science. As a club at this level you are not going to sustain your viability."

Whild says examples such as Dagenham & Redbridge and Havant & Waterlooville show that such mergers can work well.

But he admits that there would be many hurdles to overcome before any such marriage with their old rivals would be accepted by followers of either club.

"From a football point of view there are positives and negatives," he said. "But whether it would work I can't give you the answer to that."
