Wivenhoe heartened by meeting

Football

Ridgeons Premier Division outfit Wivenhoe Town are delighted with the turnout at a crisis meeting.

Town have hit severe financial problems following the departure of manager Richard Carter.

Friday night's FA Vase tie against Cornard will be the last match for many players due to the money issues.

Wivenhoe spokesman Nick Murphy-Whymark told BBC Essex: "We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community."

This club now needs to be more community based and not just about the football

The meeting at the club's Broad Lane ground was attended by members of the local council, community groups and youth football clubs.

Murphy-Whymark said: "We now need to be more community based and use the facilities during the week and not just for football."

Wivenhoe are currently third in the league table after dropping out of the Ryman League last season.

Murphy-Whymark concluded: "We could be looking at calling ourselves Wivenhoe Community Club and using the facilities for yoga classes and various other things as well as looking after the football side."
