Steve Morison scored Stevenage's second and third goals
Stevenage and York shared a thrilling draw at Broadhall Way with all six goals coming in the opening hour.
York's Mark Robinson put the ball into his own net when trying to clear Steve Morison's shot, and Morison doubled the lead after Anthony Thomas's knockdown.
Onome Sodje pulled one back with a cool finish, and Craig Farrell fed Peter Holmes to level just before the break.
Farrell's drilled shot made it 3-2 to York but Morison nodded his second of the game from Peter Vincenti's cross.
York City boss Colin Walker told BBC Radio York:
"I think we deserved at least what we got and we always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
"We had faith in the players, they all worked their socks off and I'm really proud of them."
