York striker Craig Farrell struck 19 minutes from time to hand them three points away against Crawley.
Farrell curled a shot into the Crawley net off the post after the Minstermen had twice been denied by the woodwork.
Richard Brodie forced Simon Rayner into an early save before hammering a free-kick against the crossbar.
Crawley then lost captain Chris Giles to injury and Ben Wilkinson hit the post after 65 minutes for City, before Farrell popped up with the winner.
