Nuneaton pair sign up for Telford

Rob Smith hopes to have wrapped up his summer dealings

AFC Telford United have pulled off the signings of Nuneaton Borough duo Andy Brown and Gavin Cowan.

Defender Cowan has been followed to Shropshire by 22-year-old striker Brown, who has penned a one-year deal to complete the Bucks' summer spending.

"Andy's a proven goalscorer," Telford boss Rob Smith told BBC Shropshire. "With Terry Fearns from Droylsden we've got the strike force we want.

"And Gavin's a top-notch defender - I can't believe we've got him really."

Telford had already signed Droylsden striker Fearns, as well as Liam Blakeman from Southport. And, having released seven players following their failure in the Blue Square North play-offs, the club have confirmed that the signings of Brown and Cowan should complete their rebuilding for next season.

"Added to the other two we've got four quality top-drawer signings," said Smith.

Brown and Cowan have been brought in on free transfers, after contracts were declared void at hard-up Nuneaton.

Cowan will line up with close friend and former Shrewsbury Town team-mate Stewart Whitehead. And Telford apparently beat a number of other Blue Square sides to Brown's signature.

"I think he had 11 calls from teams in our league when the Nuneaton situation came out," said Smith. "But he came to see us at Telford and was so impressed by the set-up he signed there and then.

"It couldn't have gone better this summer, and I can't wait to start work with the new boys."
