Bloxwich returns to football map

Bloxwich is to have its own football team again, three years after its previous club went out of business.

West Midlands League Division One champions Birchills United have decided the rename themselves Bloxwich United.

"The lack of a senior non-league team to represent the town is something that needed to be addressed," said United's player-manager Michael Moseley.

"The fact that all of our players are local lads, with an average age of 21 counts for a lot," he added.

Recent years have seen the demise of both Bloxwich Town and Blakenall who had spent many years in the Southern League.

United were formed in 2006 and have made rapid progress from their base at the Old Red Lion Ground in the town.

"A lot of people who followed Blakenall and Bloxwich Town have already started coming along to see what we are about," Moseley noted.

"We want to be able to reach out to the local community and give them a club they can associate with."

United's first game since the name change will be a pre-season friendly against Walsall at the Old Red Lion Ground on Friday, 11 July.
