Kirkham & Wesham going to Wembley

Kirkham & Wesham are heading to Wembley after a 1-0 FA Vase semi-final second leg win away at Needham Market gave them a 4-2 aggregate victory.

The Vodkat Leaguers now meet Lowestoft Town in the final on Sunday, 11 May.

The club's chairman Dai Davies told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's absolutely fantastic for the club, it's a fairytale story.

"I'm really proud to be at the helm of this club, hopefully the whole town will go Wembley mad."

Heavy rain made the pitch a tricky for both sides, and both created little in the way of clear-cut chances in the opening period.

It was a bit close for comfort to leave it until the last minute, but what a way to finish the game

The home side's increasingly desperate efforts to create chances left them vulnerable to the counter-attack and, as the game entered the closing stages, Kirkham substitute Matt Walwyn had two efforts saved by the keeper in the space of five minutes.

But, as the game entered stoppage time, the Lancastrians wrapped up the tie. A long through-ball found Richie Allen in space on the left, and, as the keeper advanced, the ball was squared to Matt Walwyn who had the simple task of tapping into the net.

Needham Market's Glenn Snell was red carded in the closing minutes for a challenge on Kirkham's Tony Keefe before the referee blew the final whistle and the celebrations began in the visitors' camp.

Kirkham & Wesham manager Mick Fuller said: "The team's been absolutely tremendous. They've worked, they've done what they were asked to do.

"It was a bit close for comfort to leave it until the last minute, but what a way to finish the game and get ourselves to Wembley."
