They started brightly, with Steve Daly volleying an early chance wide, but Nigel Clough's side soon took control.
Sandgrounders keeper Steven Dickinson tipped a Gary Rowett header around the post and then denied Keith Gilroy as his low drive looked destined to go in.
Aaron Webster also came close to a winner for the hosts, but he could not keep his header down from 12 yards.
