Paul Buckle has left Aldershot to join ambitious Weymouth, who are managed by former Millwall player Steve Claridge.
Buckle has recently bought a house in Torquay and travelling to Aldeshot was becoming a problem for him.
Weymouth, Manager Terry Brown said "I am very sad to see Paul leave he was a very important part of our championship winning squad last season.
"However Paul has just bought a house in Torquay and the additional travelling required as training becomes more frequent has become a real issue for him.
"We do not want to keep any player who is unhappy and the parting was very amicable. I wish Paul all the best in his future career at Weymouth."
Weymouth are run by Observer football journalist Ian Ridley.
Ridley has set himself a five-year plan to haul Weymouth into the Football League, with the club in the Conference within two years.
