Doncaster midfielder Jamie Paterson scored the only goal of a thrilling game to keep up the pressure on Conference leaders Yeovil with a win over Leigh.

Leigh went into the game with assistant boss Mark Patterson at the helm following Steve Waywell's decision to end his eight-year association with the club.

The Railwaymen responded well and made a bright start when Ged Courtney forced a fine save from Andy Warrington in the fourth minute.

But Doncaster threatened soon afterwards and Danny Hudson's fierce right-foot shot was superbly kept out by Stuart Coburn.

Coburn produced another top-class save to deny Paterson in the 24th minute before Stuart Whittaker and Neil Tolson went close for the visitors.

Paul Barnes should have given Doncaster the lead on the stroke of half-time but Coburn tipped his close-range header over the crossbar.

Both sides squandered clear-cut chances in the second period before Doncaster made the breakthrough in the 75th minute.

Paterson gave Coburn no chance with a fierce shot into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Leigh pushed forward in search of an equaliser but Doncaster held firm.
