Leigh RMI 2-1 Stevenage

Goals from Ged Kielty and Chris Ward ended Leigh's depressing run of five consecutive defeats by securing a 2-1 win over Stevenage in front of just 335 hardy fans at Hilton Park.

Stevenage were poor and they conceded the opening goal from the first real attack in the 11th minute.

Neil Fisher sent an inswinging free-kick into the penalty area and Kielty headed home at the far post.

There was little else of note in the first half, apart from bookings for Leigh's Neil Fitzhenry and Phil Salt, until a minute into stoppage time when Stevenage almost equalised.

Jean-Michel Sigere's shot from close range was saved by Leigh goalkeeper Stuart Coburn.

The second period started more encouragingly with the home side almost doubling their lead just 38 seconds after the restart, Dino Maamria having an effort brilliantly parried by Mark Westhead.

And it was Leigh who looked more likely to add further goals to their tally throughout the rest of the game.

Substitute Ward sending the ball wide from a good position and Maamria forcing another good block from Westhead before Kielty headed the rebound over the crossbar.

There was little surprise when Ward rounded off the onslaught by driving home the second goal eight minutes from time and Charlie MacDonald's 89th-minute strike was a mere consolation.

Leigh RMI: Coburn, Maden, Durkin, Fitzhenry, Monk, Salt, Kielty, Fisher, Williams, Maamria, Courtney. Subs: Harrison, Chris Ward, Tolson, McGill, Okorie.

Stevenage: Westhead, Travis, Trott, Goodliffe, Jamie Campbell, Louis Riddle, Fisher, McMahon, Williams, MacDonald, Sigere. Subs: Fraser, Wormull, Jackson, Wilson, Smith.

Referee: Darren Drysdale (Bracebridge Heights).
