F Green 0-2 Southport

Striker Neil Grayson was the unlikely scorer of an own goal as unbeaten Southport left Forest Green still seeking their first points of the Conference season.

Grayson, who netted at the right end for the Gloucestershire side in their defeat against Hereford on Tuesday, headed the ball into his own goal in the 15th minute having been back to defend a corner.

Gary Bauress made sure of the points for Southport a minute from time when he struck a terrific angled right--foot shot high into the net.

Southport were much the better side and had chances to have won more convincingly, but Steve Perrin had a fine game in the Forest Green goal.

Perrin produced saves from Mark Lloyd-Williams, Peter Thomson and a particularly smart close-range block from a Steve Jones shot.

But the home side also had several opportunities and Southport goalkeeper Steve Dickinson had to be at his best.

Steve Pickford could have scored a third goal for Southport in stoppage time but headed the ball just wide.

Forest Green: Perrin, Coupe, Russell, Langan, Jenkins, Foster, McCloughlin, Owers, Sykes, Meechan, Grayson. Subs: Pritchard, Heggs, Futcher, Tearney, Cook.

Southport: Dickinson, Winstanley, Clark, Barry Jones, Howell, Gibson, Steve Jones, Pickford, Lane, Lloyd-Williams, Thomson. Subs: Welsby, Whitehall, Scott, Bauress, James Connolly.

Referee: M Mullarkey (Exeter).
