Cup joy for Hibs
Ulrik Laursen rushes to congratulate scorer Tom McManus
Tom McManus celebrates his early strike for Hibs
Hibernian 2-0 Dundee United

Hibs put a run of disappointing results behind them to dump Dundee United at Easter Road and progress to the CIS Insurance Cup semi finals.

Goals from Tom McManus and Francisco Luna were enough to book Alex McLeish's side a place in the last four of the competition.

United battled hard throughout but their cause was hampered by the dismissal of influential midfielder Charlie Miller.

Hibs made three changes from the side that lost to Livingston on Saturday with Grant Brebner, Craig Brewster and Frederic Arpinon making way for McManus, David Zitelli and Alen Orman.

The visitors made one enforced change with David McCracken replacing the injured Jamie McCunnie.

The Easter Road side got off to a dream start by taking the lead in the second minute of the game.

Miller conceded a free-kick for bringing down Matthias Jack and Zitelli's ambitious drive looped off the foot of the United midfielder allowing McManus to sneak in and head past Paul Gallacher.

United came close in the 12th minute when James Paterson rose above Orman to meet a dangerous Miller free-kick, but the striker was unable to keep his header down.

Hibs were pushing the ball around well and created a good chance in the 26th minute when a Zitelli pass found Ian Murray, who the cut back the ball back to McManus - only for JIm Lauchlan to block the striker's effort on the turn.

Ten minutes before the interval United had to make an enforced change when Steven Thompson was replaced by Jim Paterson.

The visitors made another substitution just six minutes after the restart as Anastasios Venetis came on for David Hannah while moments later Miller was booked for a reckless challenge on Matthias Jack.

United were pushing for the equaliser and Craig Easton almost sent Miller clean through, but his pass had just too much on it giving Tony Caig the opportunity to gather.

Hibernian doubled their lead in controversial fashion on the hour mark.

John O'Neill crossed, McManus' shot was blocked and Luna reacted quickly to control the ball before firing home from close range.

The goal sparked an angry reaction from the United players, who felt the striker had used his hand in the process and Miller paid the price for remonstrating too strongly and was ordered off.

The tie should have been killed off just two minutes later when McManus got away down the right and squared for Zitelli, but with just Gallacher to beat he fluffed the chance.
