Raith Rovers 0-2 Hibernian

A Craig Brewster double against former club Raith Rovers eased Hibernian into the quarter-finals of the CIS Insurance Cup.

Rovers battled hard throughout but failed to threaten the Hibs goal and only the woodwork prevented the First Division side from taking a heavier beating.

The home side went into the third round tie with a weakened side after in-form Spanish striker Nacho Novo was suspended.

Hibernian were also missing influential wing-back Ulises de la Cruz, who was on international duty, and injured defender Gary Smith.

First Division Rovers were the first to threaten, when winger Jay Stein's powerful drive flew narrowly past the post after 30 minutes.

Hibs midfielder John O'Neill rattled the home crossbar three minutes later with a tremendous angled shot from just inside the box.

Grant Brebner found himself on the end of a Tom McManus cross shortly after the break.

But, although his header from eight yards beat home goalkeeper Samuel Monin, the ball bounced off the bar and away to safety.

The visitors took a grip of the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 54th minute.

There seemed no danger when a poor clearance out of the Raith box landed at the feet of Brewster.

But the striker drove a glorious, 25-yard left-foot shot high into the net.

McManus was beginning to find gaps in the Raith defence and he brushed past Raith defender Paul Browne, but his shot from 10 yards cannoned off the post and out for a goalkick.

The young striker was again foiled by Monin, this time the Frenchman diving down to his left to pull off a great save.

Hibs continued to dominate and, in the 80th minute, they hit the crossbar for the fourth time, Brewster being the unlucky player on this occasion with a 30-yard drive.

But, five minutes later, he sealed victory for the visitors with a tremendous shot from the edge of the box that flew past the helpless Monin.

There was still time for McManus to hit the post again, this time with a shot from close range.
