Arsene Wenger admits the Champions League has become an "obsession" for Arsenal after a dramatic win against Dynamo Kiev kept their hopes alive.
Ashley Cole's 88th-minute header gave them 1-0 victory at Highbury - their first win in the competiton for nine games.
Arsenal now enter their final two games with renewed hope, leaving Wenger relieved.
He said: "I am very happy because it becomes a bit of an obsession if you are not winning. If you are not winning it becomes more of an obsession and the less likely you are to make it.
"I'm happy we have done it - but it is still an obsession."
Wenger added: "I always believed we could score a goal, but we played against a very strong and shrewd side.
"The group is not only very tight, but it is full of good teams and it is difficult to see who could come out of it."
Wenger added: "It was a surprise to see Ashley Cole score because you don't normally expect him to get goals, even though he has got a few - and you don't normally see him score headers.
"The goal might have been unexpected but Ashley is a fighter and
knows where to go when he's in the box. We encourage him to do it.
"He took his goal well. He has great character and was a winger as a
youngster. So he knows how to score.
"There was a lot of frustration when we did not get the opening and sometimes we tried too much for the perfect ball. That's when the nerves can take over.
"But we are still alive and thanks to Ashley in the end we got the win that we wanted very deeply."
