Chelsea sink Lazio
Chelsea's Adrian Mutu
Chelsea 2-1 Lazio

Goals from Frank Lampard and Adrian Mutu boosted Chelsea's Champions League hopes as Claudio Ranieri's side came from a goal down to earn a priceless win over Lazio.

The Serie A side had taken a somewhat fortuitous lead when Simone Inzaghi touched the ball home from close range to capitalise on some lax Chelsea defending.

In first-half stoppage time a Lampard shot cannoned off the bar, but just before the hour the England midfielder adjusted his calibration to clip the ball past the diving Angelo Perruzzi.

Eight minutes later Mutu gave Chelsea the lead when he turned the ball into the net at the second attempt after Jaap Stam had blocked the Romanian international's initial shot from Jesper Gronkjaer's cross.

The win propelled Chelsea to the top of Group G, two points ahead of Lazio and Sparta Prague.

Chelsea began at breakneck speed with Juan Sebastian Veron's range of passing finding gaps in the Lazio defence, while Wayne Bridge and Damien Duff probed incessantly down the left.

Mutu's movement also caused Lazio problems and he missed the game's first real chance, pulling his shot wide.

After a quiet start Eidur Gudjohnsen also began to make his presence felt and Stam did well to cut out the Icelandic international's pass to Mutu.

In those opening exchanges Bernardo Corradi had Lazio's best chance, but the striker mistimed an ambitious overhead kick from Giuseppe Favalli's lofted pass.

Carlo Cudicini had barely touched the ball in the first-half but on 39 minutes Chelsea's Italian goalkeeper found himself picking the ball out of the net.

Dejan Stankovic headed Massimo Oddo's pass back across the Chelsea goal and Inzaghi touched the ball home from close range.

In first-half stoppage time Lampard's rising shot beat Peruzzi only to rebound off the bar.

On 57 minutes Lampard finally found his range when he thumped the ball past the Lazio goalkeeper to pull Chelsea level.

Ranieri then introduced Gronkjaer for Veron and it was from the Dane's cross that Mutu profited to give Chelsea the lead.

Lazio were unable to redress the balance, though Cudicini had to be alert to tip over Corradi's powerful header.
