Real edge out Juventus
Ronaldo celebrates his goal
Real Madrid 2-1 Juventus

Real Madrid were forced to rely on a controversial late Roberto Carlos winner to edge out Juventus in the Champions League semi-final first leg at The Bernabeu.

Juventus looked on course to earn a crucial draw after David Trezequet equalised Ronaldo's early strike.

But Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos struck a long-range decider after 73 minutes - the goal only being given after consultation between referee Terje Hauge and his assistant.

Norwegian Hauge over-ruled the assistant's flag, despite three Real players being in clearly offside positions.

Juventus were furious as Real took a priceless lead to Turin for the second leg as they attempt to retain their trophy.

It was not the majestic Real who beat Manchester United, and they suffered a blow as Ronaldo limped off with a knee injury early in the second half.

KEY MOMENTS
23 mins: Ronaldo puts Real in front.
45 mins: David Trezeqguet equalises for Juventus.
73 mins: Roberto Carlos snatches victory for Real.

Trezeguet posted the warning signals for Real after only seven minutes when it took a desperate block from Roberto Carlos to deny the France striker.

Real were the usual mix of vulnerability at the back and brilliance up front - and Ronaldo was the deadly spearhead again after 23 minutes.

He was involved in a slick exchange with Fernando Morientes and buried a comprenhensive right-foot finish past Gianluigi Buffon.

Zinedine Zidane, who forced a fine save from Buffon with a trademark long-range free-kick, was only narrowly off target with a chip.

And as Real took control, Morientes missed a glorious chance, firing over the bar after more good work by Ronaldo.

But Juventus were always in contention, and delivered a classic counter-punch that floored the holders seconds before the interval.

Alessandro del Piero's cross was unconvincing, but Trezeguet was on hand to score in opportunist fashion.

Real suffered another blow five minutes after the break when Ronaldo limped off with a knee injury.

The setback lifted Juventus and Del Piero threatened to carve out a vital second for the Italians.

But Real revived themselves and took the lead in highly contentious fashion with 17 minutes left.

Roberto Carlos flashed a thrilling angled drive past Buffon, but the goal seemed certain to be ruled out with at least three Real players in offside positions.

Norwegian referee Hauge consulted his assistant, who had flagged for offside, before giving the goal.

Ivan Helguera twice came close to extending Real's lead, but Juventus held out to leave the tie delicately balanced.
