Group D

Hernan Crespo scored twice as Inter Milan beat Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam to clinch top spot in Champions League Group D.

The Argentine international scored twice in two minutes, with Rafael van der Vaart notching for Ajax.

Lyon drew 1-1 in Rosenborg, but would have snatched second place from Ajax's grasp had they won.

Rosenborg took the lead through Harald Martin Brattbakk before Sidney Govou scored for Lyon.

Group C

Real Madrid drew 1-1 in Genk to finish Group C on nine points and claim top spot.

Real had taken the lead through Jorge Lopez before Belgium striker Wesley Sonck equalised for Genk.

Roma would have finished first had they beaten AEK Athens at home but they too could only manage a 1-1 draw.

Marco Delvecchio scored for the Romans, but AEK grabbed a dramatic last-minute equaliser through Walter Centeno.

Group B

The match of the evening came in Group B between Basle and Liverpool in St Jakob Park.

Liverpool needed a win to snatch second spot from Christian Gross' team but found themselves 3-0 down at the break through goals from Julio Rossi, Christian Gimenez and Thimothee Atouba.

Gerard Houllier's team mounted a spirited second-half comeback to finish 3-3 and fall just short of qualifying.

Danny Murphy, Vladimir Smicer and Michael Owen scored the Reds' goals.

Valencia - already confirmed as group winners before the final round of matches - thrashed Spartak Moscow 3-0 at home, with Juan Sanchez scoring twice and Fabio Aurelio also notching.

Group A

Arsenal's goalless draw at home to PSV Eindhoven was enough to secure top spot in Group A.

It was the first time the Gunners had failed to score in a match since March, but Auxerre's shock 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund proved pivotal in deciding the outcome of the group.

The result in France not only ensured Arsenal topped the group but meant Auxerre snatched third place - and a spot in the Uefa Cup - from PSV.

Banjamin Mwaruwari scored the all-important goal for Auxuerre.
